Jesus wanted to remain with us always, through the sacraments and through the ordained Ministry of Holy Orders. All bishops, priests, and deacons are entrusted with the care of souls and are called to shepherd people through their pastoral ministry. This includes offering them the sacraments, preaching the word of God, and individual shepherding through spiritual guidance.
THE PERMANENT DIACONATE: Devoted to Service.
Although permanent deacons are most visible in their public liturgical and sacramental roles
within their assigned parishes, from the very beginning, the focus has been on a ministry of service to those who were marginalized physically, mentally, economically, or spiritually.
Today deacons serve as chaplains in correctional settings, nursing homes, spiritual assistants,
and pastoral visits in hospitals. Some are involved with local food banks, while others serve in soup kitchens, palliative care, hospices and many other areas.
